"So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten." - Iron and Wine

On Sunday, I was awakened in the middle of the night by the cries of my son. He was lying in the floor complaining of horrible stomach pains. I could do nothing to comfort him, so I made the decision to take him to the emergency room. Photo boyfriend helped me get him in the car and stayed behind with my other two kids. On the way, I debated with myself whether to stop by and get my mom. I knew I was capable of handling the situation myself, but I also knew it would be nice to have the help. I decided to leave it up to my son. I asked him if he wanted Grandma to come and he said yes, so, at 2:15am, I knocked on my mom's door. She answered and off we went to the emergency room.

Luckily, the ER was pretty slow that night. We were taken back to a room right away. Unfortunately, once we got back there, we spent most of our time waiting. Nice. I was trapped in a tiny room with my estranged mom with nothing to do. It was awkward to say the least. About halfway through our time there, my mom brought up my ex-husband. She asked me if it bothered me he had a girlfriend. I said, "Not in the slightest." Then, I looked at her and said,  "There's your sign." She said, "Well, why didn't you figure this out before you had 3 children with him." I said, "I don't know, but aren't you glad I didn't? Otherwise, we wouldn't have these precious children in our lives." She looked at me and for once in her life didn't have a comeback.

The sun was rising as we walked out of the ER that morning. It had been a rough night, but after a CT scan, my son was cleared of appendicitis and released. As I was driving back home, I found myself reflecting on the night. I had noticed a slight change in my mom after our exchange at the hospital. She seemed to treat me with a little more respect. I realize it could have just been a temporary thing or the effects of sleep deprivation, but it gave me hope. Maybe something good came out of our nightmarish night.
