"So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten." - Iron and Wine

On Sunday, I was awakened in the middle of the night by the cries of my son. He was lying in the floor complaining of horrible stomach pains. I could do nothing to comfort him, so I made the decision to take him to the emergency room. Photo boyfriend helped me get him in the car and stayed behind with my other two kids. On the way, I debated with myself whether to stop by and get my mom. I knew I was capable of handling the situation myself, but I also knew it would be nice to have the help. I decided to leave it up to my son. I asked him if he wanted Grandma to come and he said yes, so, at 2:15am, I knocked on my mom's door. She answered and off we went to the emergency room.

Luckily, the ER was pretty slow that night. We were taken back to a room right away. Unfortunately, once we got back there, we spent most of our time waiting. Nice. I was trapped in a tiny room with my estranged mom with nothing to do. It was awkward to say the least. About halfway through our time there, my mom brought up my ex-husband. She asked me if it bothered me he had a girlfriend. I said, "Not in the slightest." Then, I looked at her and said,  "There's your sign." She said, "Well, why didn't you figure this out before you had 3 children with him." I said, "I don't know, but aren't you glad I didn't? Otherwise, we wouldn't have these precious children in our lives." She looked at me and for once in her life didn't have a comeback.

The sun was rising as we walked out of the ER that morning. It had been a rough night, but after a CT scan, my son was cleared of appendicitis and released. As I was driving back home, I found myself reflecting on the night. I had noticed a slight change in my mom after our exchange at the hospital. She seemed to treat me with a little more respect. I realize it could have just been a temporary thing or the effects of sleep deprivation, but it gave me hope. Maybe something good came out of our nightmarish night.

  1. Love the lighting on these... Your hair just glows! :)
Can I ask what camera your photographer uses?

  3. Your inclusion of your mom involving your son in his time of need, your honesty with your mom and the fact that she seems to really listen to your answers.....and sleep deprivation....seem to be the makings of reconciliation. I hope, for your sake, it sticks. BTW - I love the venue for your pics. Perfect for fall and I love the ones where you are sitting in the tall grass (this and others you have one in the past). It makes me wanna take a nap there! :) Cheers! xoxo

  4. I wonder if your Mom was happy that you reached out to her? I think asking your Mom to go to the hospital with you, shows her that despite everything, you trust and respect her enough to be there with you and your son. Mom's like to be needed... can you tell I'm in therapy with Mom issues?

  5. Oh wow, Bonnie, I LOVE this outfit on you! That raspberry red is the perfect 'pop' color with the browns and dark blue leggings. This is just a beautiful outfit on you, perfect. Oh, and your hair is fabulous, btw. I love that you keep it long, it's a really good look with your delicate facial features.

  7. Bonnie, one night is not getting over nastiness, but obviously just apply new grandparent love. Even some time. It may ease

  8. I'm glad you and your mom might be getting along better, but I'm more frightened for your son! What was wrong with him? Appendicitis was ruled out, but why was he on the floor in the first place? The poor thing must have been so frightened!

  9. Glad to hear your boy is ok.

  10. I think you should chop your hair to your chin, so that it angles inward.

  11. Despite so much going on with your lives right now, i'm curious how do both of you find the time/mood to go around taking pictures all day everyday? Wouldn't you rather spend those extra hours and minutes with your children instead? Or does it mean that they don't matter anymore? Inquiring minds want to know...

Even in your 4th picture up there, there is sadness behind those eyes even though you are trying hard to look smug.

  12. He had a viral infection in his intestines. He's doing much better now and went back to school today.

  13. Thanks for the suggestion. I don't think it's gonna happen, though. I love long hair!

  14. Yeah, I'm in therapy for Mom issues too. I seriously doubt she was happy. She complained the whole time we were at the hospital. I think it's just a matter of she saw my point of view for the first time. We'll see what becomes of it... Good luck with your own issues!

  15. Thanks Sherry! There were fire ant hills everywhere. It may look like it in photos, but it's not the ideal spot for naps.
