"I had a secret meeting in the basement of my brain." - The National

I was quite proud of myself for this outfit. I did not buy any of these pieces intending to wear them together. This was a creation born purely from the effects of shower brain. You know, that thing that happens to your brain first thing in the morning while taking a shower. It's truly a magical time. Suddenly, that problem at work that seemed so unsolvable the day before has an easy solution. As the water pours down, all sorts of ideas begin pulsing through your head, brilliant ideas like writing about your crotch in your next blog post and creative ideas like what you are going to wear that day.

On this particular morning, I knew I wanted to wear the new top I had just gotten on sale from Anthropologie. I purchased this top with the intent of wearing it untucked with skinny jeans, but I really wanted to challenge myself and figure out a different way to wear it. The next logical solution was to wear it tucked into a skirt. The first skirt that popped into my mind was this little asymmetrical number from Old Navy. It is also a recent acquisition. I have to say I was quite hesitant when I purchased this skirt because a little old lady was purchasing it at the same time. Oh, the horror! However, I told myself that the hem line was on trend and that I could sex it up a bit by wearing a less conservative top. I think this particular top serves that function nicely. Anyway, back to the shower. The next item that popped into my head was this belt. I knew I needed something to define the waist and this seemed liked the right belt to do the job. Once the belt was chosen, I knew exactly which sandals I wanted to wear, and with that, folks, I had myself an outfit.

Now, I must tell you, I think up a lot of outfits under the influence of shower brain. However, once I get out of the shower and put the items together on my body, they don't quite work out like they did in my head. So, I was anxious to find out how this outfit would fair. I washed up quickly, dried off, and made a beeline for my closet. I laid each of the items out on my bed and was happy to see that they looked great together. Now, it was time for the real test. How would they look on my body? I put on the top and the skirt and looked in the mirror. I wasn't sure it was going to work. Then, I put on the belt, and again, looked in the mirror. Magic! The belt made all the difference. I walked out the door feeling confident and proud.

And they say us fashion types don't use out brain...

  4. I'm skeered of the mullet skirt on myself but you wear it well! I like this - I like the belt at the waist. Very feminine!
