"Ground your sense of worth till the spark of morning burns and all those searching eyes could scold your tender mind."
- Broken Bells

I've been in a bit of a fashion slump lately. Over the last few days, I've pretty much decided that I hate most of the clothes in my closet. I really wish I could just wear pajamas everyday. I have no problems picking out pajamas at night. However, mornings are a different story. Each morning, I just stand in my closet feeling sad and uninspired by the clothes staring back at me. Yes, my clothes stare. It's very rude of them, especially first thing in the morning. I'm sure this slump has more to do with my attitude and less to do with the actual quality (and quantity) of my clothes. I guess I'm just all out of creative juices at the moment, so I decided to rely on you guys for inspiration today.

I'm wearing everyone's favorite dress again, the Alary Shirtdress! I know for some of you there is nothing that can help this hideous creation short of burning it, but I have attempted to take your styling advice, dear readers, and have added some touches that perhaps make this dress look a little less granny. First, I opted to ditch the "little old lady" bun and wear my hair down this time around. Second, I added a thicker belt. It's still teal, but a thicker version since it was suggested a less dainty belt would help with the granny factor. Last, I added some Frye's. My new motto is: "When all else fails, add some Frye's." Frye boots pretty much make everything look better.

So, what do you think? Is Alary Shirtdress Redux an improvement over the original? Or should I bid the redux adieu and make this dress one less thing that stares at me in the morning?

  1. I am majorly in love with this dress. I liked it last time and I like it this time... wait "I LOVE IT" both times! I wish I had this dress. And the teal belt brings out the teal in the dress in such a nice way. You look fantastic and not granny at all. Those people that said that before are just crazy. ;) Just kidding - your readers aren't crazy - but I do think you look beautiful. xoxo

  4. I love this! I think this is a perfect combo and does not look at all that like you feel in a fashion slump! :)

  5. It looked great on you before and looks great now! I loved your hair up in that bun! I am not crazy about the pattern on this dress but it does seem very "fall" to me for some reason and the cut looks amazing on you. Love it this time with the blue belt and the Frye boots. Great job! Hope you are out of your slump soon.

  6. Hi, Bonnie:

I agree with Sherry. I love both looks. This dress is hard to wear. But it does suit you well.

  7. That really does look cuter.

  8. Super cute, the thick belt is perfect, and the colors are lovely on you. But I think the aspect of the dress that makes it tend toward 'granny' is the sleeve length-- you have lovely, slim arms and this dress doesn't show them off. Waist-length sleeves can be a bit awkward proportionally. If you're feeling iffy about it, maybe try cuffing the sleeve bottoms inward two inches or so to see if you like it. If you do, any tailor should be able to shorten them for you.

  9. I'm still not crazy about the dress but I think it's a definite improvement! I'm actually wondering if it might look even better if you took it to a tailor and took a few inches off the length and off the sleeve length. Regardless, if you're happy with it, who cares what others think.

  10. I am a huge fan of this dress. It has nice structure - its crisp! This belt is cute too! And I agree, Frye boots are the best. I have my mom's fryes from 1973 and they're still going strong!

  12. Thanks girl! Frye's from the 70's? What could be better than that! So jealous!

  13. Hmm...I never even thought about the sleeve length. I guess I can see how that could add to the "granny factor." I'll probably wear a cardigan over this dress for the next few months (which could also be a problem but I ain't gonna freeze for fashion), so I'm not going to worry about the sleeves for now. Thanks for the suggestions!

  14. Thanks Julie! You are the second commenter to mention the sleeves. I definitely see where yall are coming from. It is an awkward sleeve length. I'm going to try it with a cardigan next time and see what that does.

  16. Thanks Catherine! I'm so glad you're not a "bun hater." LOL! It's nice to just throw your hair up in one of those when you don't feel like messing with it. Call me crazy, but I just LOVE the pattern on this dress. It looks so vintage to me which may be why some people think it's "granny."
