"Even from away he is near me, making me unendingly teary. Makes me remember the things that I forgot. It's as much what it is as what it is not. In a room sleeping so peacefully...All we need is a horizon line, get some clarity following signs. First light was, last light was alright when the circle married the line." - Feist

It's been a rough day. I've come to expect it from Monday's, but this one has been particularly bad. Some days it feels like it's Jerry and I against the world. However, our bad day was bookended by a good beginning and a good ending inspired by the horizon.

The morning started with a spectacular sunrise. As I was stirring in bed, Jerry opened the blinds and pointed it out to me. It was still dark outside. The only light was on the horizon line. It was the most beautiful shade of orange silhouetted by the trees. It's the start of my week without the kids, so I was feeling pretty down when I woke up, but this beautiful sunrise made getting up on this Monday morning much easier. We talked and laughed until the sun rose over the trees and spilled into our window. In the light of day, reality set in, and we started getting ready for work.

After a long day at work, Jerry and I went out in a harvested corn field to get some photos of my new dress. It was the perfect temperature outside, and our background was a gorgeous Fall sunset. Once again, I found myself looking at the beautiful horizon and finding clarity and peace in an otherwise confusing and chaotic day. We got some great photos and kissed as the sun disappeared behind the trees.

With all the adversity going on in our lives right now, it's so easy for Jerry and I to get discouraged in the middle of our day. We feel very much misunderstood and down right discriminated against. Our time together makes it all worth it. Whatever may happen, I know everything will be alright as long as we have each other.

  1. Hi, Bonnie:

You wear this dress beatifully! Love the 3rd and the 6th picture!

    Keep up the good job!

  2. Love the setting, ADORE the shoes, 'meh' on the dress....or so I thought. Then I realized it wasn't the dress that was off putting to me in these photos, it was your hair-do. I think your hair frames your face so well when it's down that I've gotten used to it being an essential element in a lot of your outfits. In my opinion (for what THAT'S worth, this is the internet you know) it looks a bit severe and 'not you' when it's pulled back and knotted up like you have it in these photos. How silly is that? I don't even know you, yet feel totally justified in claiming that your hair is horribly misrepresenting you. ;)

  3. Bonnie, in my honest opinion, I don't the dress is the most flattering on you. I feel that the shape makes you look 'wide', when there are so many other dresses that flatter you most better, like the verdant slip for example. I think for a full-price purchase, you could probably do to purchase something else. There are so many other lovely dresses out there! Don't take this negatively, but I just feel like the alary dress only makes you look old and 'big'.

Have you tried the unconditional osier dress?

  4. Love the shoes. Hate the dress. Looks like it came right out of the Cabela's catalog. I like your hair up.

  5. Time heals, Bonnie. Your life changes are fresh right now...so the highs and lows can be extreme. In time, people will be gentler. I've gone through 2 divorces and know the pain. The pain is nothing but a distant memory now. Try to take comfort in the fact that you stayed honest and made decisions to empower yourself.

  6. Thanks for the words of encouragement. They are much needed.

  7. Thanks for the input, but I really love this dress. I understand how the print could not be for everyone, but I think it's great. Different strokes for different folks.

  8. Thanks for your opinion. I'm getting a lot of "old" lately. You guys sure know how to make a girl feel good. LOL! I'm usually my own worst critic, and I do not feel this dress makes me look wide. I think the teal skinny belt I paired with it draws the attention to the smallest part of my waist. The fact is, I'm not super skinny, so I'm going to look wide sometimes. Are there items in my closet that make me look skinner than this dress? Probably, but I don't feel this dress is unflattering on me. If I'm wrong, well, I love this dress enough that I will walk around wide and proud. Maybe I'll hang a "wide load" sign around my neck the next time I wear it. ;-)

Yes, I purchased the Osier Dress and wore it today. I will be wearing it in my next post. I actually felt wider in that dress than this one, but again that's going to happen. I'm not the smallest girl in the blogosphere. Let me know what you think about that dress in my next post. Please be gentle with me...

  9. I've always hated my hair up, but most people tell me they like it better pulled off my face. Truth is, I didn't feel like washing it, so I pulled it up. Oh well, you win some, you lose some. Can't please everybody all the time. Thanks for your opinion!

  10. And I love the dress. It's on the top of my wishlist!

  11. Love how you put the teal belt with the dress! And I feel you on the hair - I wear that same hairstyle often because I am just to lazy to fuss with it, lol.

  12. Oh my goodness Bonnie, I can't believe anyone would tell you that you look bad or wide or that your dress is ugly. That just amazes me. It is your dress all that matters is that you like it. I had a friend ask me the other day why I stopped posting my art on Facebook, because he doesn't live near me it is the only chance he gets to see it. I told him it was because of some mean comments I received about my art, he said there is no need for people to lie about liking my artwork but nor is there reason to be mean not everyone likes the same things. I thought this was so true and the next day I posted my most recent artwork. So don't worry about the mean comments, you are brave and strong and beautiful and if you like your dress that is ALL THAT MATTERS!

  13. Hi Bonnie, I love this dress on you. the lighting in these pics is amazing (well done Jerry). I love your beautiful photos.

  14. I actually think this dress makes you look tiny! I am not wild about the print but it is different and unique so there is something to that. And, your hair looks great up! You have a nice jaw line and a nicely shaped face. Wearing your hair up is very flattering. Love the shoes too. Where did you find those?

I think the stuff related to how people are treating you is probably worse because you are in a small town. It is going to take awhile for people to move on to something else.

  15. Thanks Catherine! I got the shoes last year from DSW. They were only $30!

  16. Thanks Kerry! I love how these turned out as well.

  17. I can believe it, and it doesn't bother me. In fact, I thought the comment was done in a nice way, and I took it as constructive criticism. We all have different tastes and opinions, so I don't expect everyone to like everything I wear. I think the commenter was just trying to suggest another dress she thought would be better to spend my money on. She didn't say I looked old and wide, she said the dress made me look old and wide. I can appreciate the difference there. That being said, I think it's totally inappropriate for people to be rude in their criticism. I've received a lot of comments in that spirit, and I'm sorry you had to deal with that on Facebook. I put a lot of thought and effort into these posts, so it hurts when someone, for lack of a better term, craps all over it. It's like someone talking bad about your baby. So, I understand how you feel when people say mean things about your artwork. Good for you for staying strong and continuing to post your art!

  18. Thanks for giving me props on the teal belt! I was proud of myself for finding it in my closet that morning. I haven't worn it in awhile and couldn't believe how well it went with this dress!

  19. I agree about the hair, I think the dress looked better on you in the dressing room pic. I think with a structured dress like that, it helps to have some contrast, like a free-flowing hairdo.

  20. I don't like the dress at all. I don't like moths and don't like the pattern but different strokes for different folks. I think the big problem is that the fabric along with the style/cut make the dress appear very matronly and frumpy....especially when worn with your shoes and hairstyle. I'm wondering if you wore it with boots and possibly a wider belt, you'd be able to make the dress appear more youthful. Not sure. I didn't like it in your fitting room reviews, and you were wearing it with boots then but I still think boots or different shoes might help. Also, I would definitely wear your hair down. If that doesn't work, you could also save this dress for when you're a little old lady because it might be more appropriate then and you might look really cute in it. I hope you take this as constructive criticism and not meanness. And in the end, if you like it, who cares what I or anyone else thinks!
Just curious....does Jerry like this outfit?

  21. I will take your suggestion and try it with boots, wider belt, and my hair down next time. While I don't think your comment was mean, I do think you were being a bit of a smart ass telling me to save it for when I'm a little old lady, but it's really hard to convey tone in a comment. My opinion is this is a retro look. I don't expect everyone to like, but I also don't think retro = little old lady. Thanks for your suggestions and we'll see how how it turns out next time.

  22. I'm glad that you and Jerry like it. That's all that maters. And you're right, the tone was lost in my message. I truly wasn't trying to be a smart ass. I could honestly see this dress looking cute on a little old lady and it could actually look kinda chic on her. I also agree with you that it looks retro because it reminded me of something June Cleaver would wear.

  23. Yes Jerry does like this dress. I fear I may have mislead Bonnie. I was all about it from the start. She looks sharp in it. It's not overly sexy in a conventional way, but she wears it well. I guess you'd have to know Bonnie to get what she's up to here. She works with data and software in a way that no one in the building can. When things don't work she is often the only one that can fix them. She likes her technological toys and is all about the next thing coming out. She's definitely not old school, so when she wears something like this, it's not because she is living in the 50's. She wears a lot of styles and I think she may have nailed this one too well. People think she is living in this choice when she's really sampling an era. As a disclaimer, I'm only using conjecture about her thoughts here. We really haven't discussed that part in detail. Don't worry though, if this dress isn't your thing. What she wears is much like the weather here in eastern Carolina. If you don't like it, hang around and it'll change.

Don't know if I'm supposed to be handing out teasers,
but the shoes in the next post... pretty cool.

  24. By the way - the belt is genius.... I don't think I said that before. And you do look tiny in everything you wear. I envy your body type - but I embrace mine... and I am absolutely NOT the typical pretty girl. Big hugs to you and your cuteness!
