"I took a walk." - Passion Pit

Has it really been 10 days since I last blogged? Wow, this has got to be a first - time flying when you are not having fun. Actually, it hasn't been that bad, definitely not as bad as I thought it was going to be during those first few hours I was coming to terms with being burglarized. I thought I might die without a TV and computer, but, miraculously I'm still here. We've managed to find other ways to entertain ourselves. Board games and books have come back in style around my house, and there is a whole lot more yard work being done, which has been both a blessing and a curse. The lawn and flowers look nice, but Jerry and the kids have gotten a little too aggressive in cutting down trees and bushes for my taste. Idle hands and all...

Say what you want about them, human beings really are resilient creatures. All we need is time. I often get frustrated with Jerry because when we are arguing he tends to disappear. When he reappears, I ask him where he went and he says, "For a walk." I just can't fathom how he can take a leisurely walk in the middle of our fight when all I want to do is talk it out and resolve the problem. If anything good has come out of the burglary, it has given me a better understanding of his motivations "to walk" now.

My first reaction to any bad situation is to calmly spiral into a fit of anxiety. From the outside observer, I appear to be perfectly fine, but inside I'm a mess. I do something my therapist calls, "Catastrophic Thinking." One bad thing happens and then I assume my whole life is going to turn to shit, and it all goes downhill from there. However, if I look back on all the bad things that have happened to me, I always find that given a little bit of time, things are never as bad as they seemed at first.

So, in the spirit of trying to learn from my mistakes, I decided to give myself a little time for the burglary to sink in before completely freaking out. This is the main reason I took a break from the blog. Yes, our computers got stolen, but I still had access to one on a daily basis and could have blogged if I had really wanted to. I thought it was best to get a better perspective on the situation before blogging my guts out, though. I'm sure I would have come off as a materialistic asshole in the first few days after the burglary. Someone stole our stuff, and I was pissed. I just wanted our stuff back. Also, I kind of lost my faith in humanity. I mean, you hear about stuff like this on the news all the time, but it's not completely real until it happens to you. You find yourself saying things like, "This world is going to hell in a handbasket." You also find yourself afraid of every little noise in your home. What is probably just a rat shuffling around upstairs becomes all kinds of horrible scenarios in your mind. Enough to prompt an excursion around the house with the gun.

Now that time has passed, I can see the situation for what it really is - just some missing stuff. Buglaries happen everyday, and they are not the end of the world. All the important things in my life are still intact, and we are taking measures to safeguard ourselves and our stuff in the future. I'm feeling much better and ready to move on with my life. It's amazing what a little walk can do.
