"Today was supposed to be not just another day." - Andrew Bird
The pieces in today's outfit are old, really old. I know, it's a momentous day. I don't typically hold on to clothing for very long. My style changes, I get sick of looking at something, etc. However, this sweater and dress have overcome the odds. They have made the closet cut time and time again. I feel like I should examine why, because, clearly, these are the types of pieces I should be buying.
I purchased the sweater from Express around 8 years ago. Express is typically not my style, but there was this one season back in 2004 when their clothes took on a earthy, boho vibe. Corporate must have been trying a new angle or something. Anyway, it worked for me because I made a beeline into the store and purchased pretty much the entire collection. This sweater is the only thing that remains from that shopping spree. It's neutral color and cropped length make it a great staple to throw on over many different things. In addition, the pointelle knit, scalloping, and wood buttons really fit my style.
The dress was a sale purchase from Anthropologie back in 2009. I fell in love with the color, but I waited to get it on sale, because I wasn't sure about the revealing neckline. Luckily, I had my trusty Express sweater to save the day. This was my first foray into the land of maxi dresses. 3 years later, maxi dresses are still a hot commodity, and this dress is still in my closet. In fact, every maxi dress I've ever purchased is in high rotation in my wardrobe. You can't beat their comfort and ease.
I must confess I do have on one new thing: my earrings. However, even they are not technically new as I bought the same pair a couple of years ago, lost one, and then replaced them a few weeks ago with this pair. I wish I would have thought to have Jerry get a good shot of them. In case you are wondering, this is what they look like. Speaking of earrings, I've been thinking about getting a new piercing. It feels weird to type that out, like I'm some veteran piercee or something. Not hardly. I've only had my ears pierced and that was when I was 5 years old. Anyway, I've been thinking about a tragus piercing. They are not too radical, and I think they're kinda sexy.
Well, I've rambled on enough I suppose. It's weird. This post is very reminiscent of my posts back in the old days before things got so serious. I'm sure it won't last, but it's nice to do things differently every once in a while. You know, like an opposite day, which just so happens to be the name of today's song by Andrew Bird. We're going to see Mr. Bird in concert tomorrow night in Raleigh. It should be a good time. I plan on stopping by Anthro before the show to do some reviews and to not make a purchase. Opposite day, indeed!

I think it's great that you're wearing your "old" items. I have dresses that are over 10 years old that I still love and wear. And their style has stood the test of time.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised that you're stopping by Anthro. What about your recent post about not wanting to shop so much? Isn't going into an Anthro store as an Anthro addict kind of like a recovering alcoholic hanging out at a bar? Hope this isn't coming across as a rude comment. I just think...why tempt yourself? you are likely setting yourself up for failure by going into Anthro and doing reviews...(although I do like your reviews....sorry now I sound like I'm enabling you!).
I love wearing older, tried and true items from my closet. It means I've gotten my money's worth! :) I usually justify making clothing or shoe purchases with thoughts of "I'll get lots of wear out of this." If I don't, it feels like a waste and I'll feel guilty about it.
ReplyDeleteThat is an adorable little sweater that is surely a closet staple! Good luck with the trip to Anthro (and not buying anything!). That 25% off sale got me. I bought just a few things that I know I will get a lot of wear out of though.
Have always been hesitant of maxis, especially in jersey fabric - I am not as keen to show all the lumps and bumps.
ReplyDeleteI love this outfit... I would totally rock it. I sort of did today - you inspired me. A blue maxi with a white Dolman sleeve top over the top and sandals. Super cute and I got tons of compliments. I LOVE MAXI'S! You are a beauty!
ReplyDeleteI love the outfit. The blue is stunning
