"So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking, racing around to come up behind you again. The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older, shorter of breath and one day closer to death." - Pink Floyd

Let's talk about aging. Lately, I've been noticing when I wake up in the mornings that the skin on my chest is all wrinkly. It stays that way for a few hours and then goes back to normal. I guess it's due to laying on my side with my chest wrinkled up all night. It must be that whole lack of elasticity thing that happens to your skin when you get old. It takes the old skin awhile to bounce back. It's so weird to see your body doing things like this that it's never done before.

Another example: My right knee pops all the time, and it's not just your normal, run-of-the-mill pop, it's really loud, and it always seems to do it at the most inopportune times. Like, during really romantic moments - ugh, so embarasssing and really ruins the mood. Oh, and I'm obsessed with wrinkly eyelids now. An anonymous commenter who was not very nice once asked why I had two eyelids (Ha, ha, very funny, jerk!). I had never noticed before, so I looked at some pictures of myself, and yep, there is a large wrinkle in the middle of my eyelids. I started panicking and wondering if this had always been there or if it was yet another symptom of being old. I had Jerry close his eyes and he had the lines too, but he's really old, so it didn't make me feel any better. I now find myself looking at everyone's eyelids. Our waitress at the bar the other night had the lines, and she looked really young. Hmm...maybe it's just normal for some people.

In addition to the lovely aesthetic side effects of getting old, there is also the physical pain. It seems more and more ailments keep springing up and staying around longer. I'm already on like 5 medications. I guess it's time to break down and get a little zip lock bag in which to carry all my meds around. Next thing you know, I'll have to give up heels and wear those hideous orthopaedic shoes. Jerry's already gone there. (Love you, honey. Kisses.)

Despite all these complaints, I wouldn't trade it for the world. I love getting older. I feel I know myself better each and every day. It really is a beautiful thing. The body may fall apart, but the mind is definitely wiser. Life is short, and I want to enjoy this ride while it lasts, even if I don't feel or look as good doing it.

  1. I've read that people in Korea that that double eyelids make people more beautiful. Different cultures and different perceptions. :)

  2. You are not old, first off! I'm 35 and I don't think I'm old (okay, maybe a little). Give yourself another 10 years or so before you start saying that! As far as the physical stuff with getting old, exercise is incredibly beneficial to counteracting all of that. I have definitely become more physically active in the last 10 years. I think I'm stronger and healthier than I was in my 20s. Hit the gym, start running, yoga, dance whatever but finding something active that you love is essential to aging gracefully.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that jacket! Is that new or has it been hanging out in the depths of your closet? It is fabulous!

  3. Your eyelids are fine! It's so funny the things people don't like about themselves. I hate my fat fingers, lol. But I know what you mean about getting older and the body not responding as well...when I was 20 I could wear 4 inch heels all day long and my feet wouldn't even hurt a bit - now I wear a wedge and I limp to bed. It sucks. I can't eat candybars for lunch anymore because I feel like crap afterwards like my body knows what I'm doing and is protesting. I wish I had started taking care of myself sooner but I guess its better late than never. Late 20's/early 30's is a weird weird time - the body starts changing and the mind starts changing/finishes developing. Some days I feel like I don't know what to do with myself. Growing pains?

  5. That is like some serious old school music you've got there. Maybe you should at least fake being with the times. You know fake it 'til you make it. On another front this Jerry is starting to sound like his last name is Atrick... You know? Geriatric. Is this the same guy that lifted you into a tree? Makes me want to question his performance in other areas. As an earlier commenter pointed out, jerry is not act his age. Tsk,tsk. Oh and that red skirt is hot.

  6. Oh please! You are not old and you look younger than your age! Besides, would you really want to go back to your 20s? I sure wouldn't. Everyone gets older (hopefully), and those little lines and bumps and whatever are beautiful; they show experience and wisdom. :)
PS love the scarf with this outfit.

  7. Thanks, Melanie! Well, I wouldn't mind going back to my 20's with my mind as it is now. With this mind and that body, I could conquer the world! LMAO!

  8. Don't be hatin' on the old school! That's some good stuff right there!

Ha, Ha! "Jerry Atrick" Look at you being all witty! Yes, he is the same guy that lifted me in a tree. He also moved my piano all by himself. He's got He-man like muscles and likes to lay the smack down on witty, old school haters.

As far as his performance in other areas goes, well, let's just say he keeps me satisfied. :-)

  9. So far into my investigation, I've seen more people with the double eyelids than without, so I think I'm normal now. I was pretty freaked out at first! LOL!

Yes! I feel you on the heels and candybars. The height of my heels has definitely decreased as I've gotten older., and candy makes me feel lie death sometimes.

  10. Oh, Catherine. Do you realize what you are asking of me? I HATE exercise. I do yoga like once a year, that's about it. I know your right, though. I really need to get off my ass and just do it!

I purchased this jacket back in 2005. I made my first trip to an Anthro store in Charolotte. I drove all day and night just to go to Anthro. I tried this jacket on and fell in love, but for some stupid reason, I didn't get it. I think I was overwhelmed with my first trip to a store. It was like clothing heaven! I wanted one of everything! Once I got back home, I couldn't get this jacket out of my mind. I called the Charlotte store, and they no longer had my size. I decided to call a store in Virginia to see if they had it. They did! So, I paid for it over the phone and they shipped it to me. It was my first charge/send. I didn't know that stores could do that! Anyway, it was worth all the trouble. This little jacket has been one of those pieces that I've never gotten tired of. It's always in style and is so comfortable! That was probably way more info than you wanted to know! LOL!

  12. I've always like having two eyelids so that it made my eyeshadow blending look cooler. Another random trick: If your eyelids seem to need a little love, put a small dab of vaseline on them instead of eyeshadow (trust me, a little goes a long way). It makes them look shiny and fresh.

  13. Very nice post, Bonnie. I've kind of been thinking about that too, now that I am in my 30s. CRAZY!
Also thinking about how my tastes and such have changed over the years regarding clothing and other things.
If you have the time, I think we have some things in common: http://housewife2bediary.blogspot.com/2011/12/finer-things-in-life.html

    Take care, and Happy Christmas!!!!!

  14. You crack me up! You don't look old, you aren't old. Your eyelids...really? Stop it! You are gorgeous. Don't pick on yourself. There are enough haters out there! And I am SURE Jerry isn't checking out your eyelids...LOL. Big hugs you beautiful woman! xoxo

  15. Oh, you just have to find some type of exercise that you love!

The jacket is all kinds of awesome! Rock on, lady!

  16. Hi Bonnie I'm catching up on your blog :]
Talk about aging.. I've been very self-conscious lately about my age I'll be 30 next month and I think once it happens I might just lie about it lol One reason I've been getting self-conscious is because I'm still in college and feel out of place with those out of high school kids that don't have to work because daddy will pay for their tuition. Thank heavens I look much younger.
I do like being more mature and knowledgeable about stuff though :]

I've been really mindful of my health, I already have weird joints I'm scared to death to be one of those old ladies that are sick and can't do anything.
I've been reading this book that talks about preventing diseases and I think just by taking action and being careful with what we eat will help us age even more gracefully. People usually take quality of food for granted, the greasiest, the fastest the better but I truly believe we are or will be what we eat.
By the way your music selection is awesome :]
