"I know we suffer for fashion or whatever." - Of Montreal

Well, it's been a rough few days in the Anthro-blogging neighborhood. Reading all the comments floating around in cyberspace today got me thinking about obsessions - the good, the bad, and the ugly. I've seen a lot of comments putting down our kind. Comments like "that STF chick wears Anthro everyday from head to toe." A big thanks to that commenter for pointing out the obvious. Yes, I'm obsessed with Anthropologie. What are you obsessed with? We all have at least one obsession. Why is mine so inferior to yours? Is someone who goes to the midnight premiere of Lord of the Rings dressed as Gandalf superior to me? How about someone who spends most of their time staring at a monitor playing video games? Or someone who logs on to a certain website many times a day?

Life is tough, and I think we all have silly things that we do that make us happy. However, with obsessions or anything else in life, it all comes down to balance. There is some good to be had from obsessions. Just walking into an Anthropologie store makes me happy. I'm seriously smiling from ear to ear the whole time I'm in there, and you guys know I don't smile much. Of course, along with the good comes the bad. I've definitely spent more money in there than I should have on numerous occasions. And then there's the ugly... This is when the obsession becomes more of an addiction and it starts to interfere with your life and relationships.

So, when it comes to obsessions we should go toward the light. In other words, we should try to stick to the shinny, happy aspects of our obsession and not cross over into the dark side. I admit I have a really hard time with this. There are 5 things in my shopping cart at Anthropologie.com right now, but I know I don't have the money this pay period. I bought an Xbox for my son, and I need to get some work done on my car. So, I will be a good girl and wait patiently until next pay period. I'm not gonna lie though, I spent a lot of time staring at that cart today trying to convince myself I didn't need those items.

Even though there's a lot of hating of Anthropologie going on right now, I'm proud to say I love it. It's one of my guilty pleasures, and it makes me happy. Oh, and lest you forget, I live in a small town, so no one here knows about Anthropologie. I'm like a fashion goddess. LOL! So as long as I can afford it and it doesn't get "ugly", I will dress in Anthro from "H to T."

  1. Ooooohhhhh, so pretty Bonnie! I love those jeans on you, they are PERFECT, especially the length and the way they fit your legs. Everyone has a thing or two that they go back to over and over again that brings them comfortable pleasure, so long as (like you said) it doesn't get ugly, then who should care? It's what makes us all individual characters, what makes us each interesting to other people! Pssshht on what the sad boring people who don't have pretty little obsessions think.
Oh, and I've whittled my cart down to just those Bowed Lacerta Mary Janes. Must have, will have, stare at them everyday almost. Dang that Roxy for posting them before they ever hit the stores!
"She said I'm so obsessed that I've become a bore, oh noooooo......you think you're so pretty, eeeeee-eeeee!"

  2. Hi,

I did find you through that one website, but I ended up subscribing - I really like your pictures! And I'm a huge Death Cab fan, so I liked the little touch of music in each post as well.

I must also confess my love for anthro. I don't love everything they make, but the pieces I do purchase from them instantly become some of my favorites in my wardrobe.

I'm also on a (sigh) budget, so I actually purchase some of my anthro through Ebay. I was skeptical at first, but my friend was doing it with such great results that I thought I'd try it out. I've gotten some great deals on anthro dresses and haven't had any problems from the pieces being "used." Just an idea.... =)

  3. Oh Bonnie...I have to confess I've been TOTALLY swept up in the drama. Partially, because I had no idea there was so much venom for Anthro-blogging and partially because there was so much drama involving the personal shopping caper. Especially because both Roxy and Kim were on MY dinky little podcast together. I watched ALL the drama go down and I had a number of different feelings. I felt a little ashamed that I wrote an Anthro-centric blog for a bit as I read all the threads over at the other site where they were giving you a hard time. Then I was totally paranoid that they were going to just devote all of their time to make fun of all of us! Then I was shocked over the last development. I have to say, I'm impressed that you dealt with all of this so well in the end and I admire your sense of humor. The other site DID make me LOL a bunch of times and your posts made me smile too. I look forward to your December posts ;-)

I love Anthro because it's fun and I always get compliments on pieces and they make me happy! Bottom line! Why not have some fun in my downtime and talk about pretty clothes? There is certainly A LOT MORE going on in most of our live besides our obsession with ruffly blouses. No one's perfect. No one is the same. We all make mistakes, we all say things we regret and we all judge people, even if just a little. But at the end of the day, a real wrong-doing was exposed and hopefully, we'll be able to move on from this.

By the way, Bonnie...THAT'S the top that got away from me! So jealous!

  4. I have to say that I don't always agree with some of the things you write (and agree with some of the commenters who raise questions that can be construed as criticism) but reading your comments over there and you showing your sense of humor about the situation (the poses in particular) has kept me a follower of yours! Yes, many of the comments over there were mean but I'm glad you can find humor in it.

  5. I still don't understand what the drama is all about. If you don't like a blog, or something a person did, why read it? Pretty simple. If it's personal between you and that person, take it off the Internet. I have stopped following specific blogs because I just didn't get that person's style but someone else does I'm sure. Why be snarky about it? I know there are a couple of blogs out there that make fun of some of the catalogs which can be hilarious but it's not about people's personal styles. Life is too short to read things you don't like and there is enough sadness in the world that it is ridiculous to spend precious time making fun of someone's clothes or judging their life choices. If you have that much free time and energy, find a charity.

  6. I have my obsessions, as well. And in the arena in which my obsessions exist, I get a lot of "haters". I think they are just jealous. I have been told that people are jealous of me and that just shocks me when I hear it or find out who they are!!! I just love people and want them to be successful and I am always surprised to find out that people I really like don't like me when I am THEIR FAN! What is there NOT to like about me? I am funny, smart, excited about life, full of energy, happy to be a part of something bigger than myself, genuinely excited to see others succeed, and on-and-on-and-on. People are SO WEIRD! They like to make themselves feel better by pushing other people off of the pedestal THEY put someone on. I don't put myself up there to be pushed off... someone else put me up there in their mind and then take pleasure in seeing me fall. Interestingly enough, it is only in their eyes I was up there and will fall. Just keep being you - with your feet firmly planted on the ground. And BLOOM WHERE YOU ARE PLANTED - just like you do everyday. The reason your site is a must read for me every day is watching you bloom. Big hugs! Hang in there... I am a fan of the visible transformation of you "blooms". Big hug!

I read your blog all the time, but I'm terrible at commenting! Will try to be better from now on. I'm really envious of how gorgeous all of your photos are!
I'm really shocked at the vitriolic nature of some of the things that are being said about the Anthro blogs (mine included). A lot of it seems really mean spirited, and I'm afraid I'm not taking it as well as you do, but I will try to have a better sense of humour about it now. Bloggers unite!

  8. Bonnie, I love your perspective on things! I think what I like about your blog is that you are very comfortable and confident with who you are. You have handled that crap on that website devoted to snark with grace. I don't know why but reading it made me feel bad about myself for loving to read the fashion blogs, for caring about what I look like and enjoying fashion. I think you've set the tone for your readers, kind of led the way a little in telling us that it is perfectly okay to like that stuff, so long as it doesn't get unhealthy or detrimental to your life.

I do think that other women see confident women and respond with such vengeance out of jealousy, when you really get down to it.

  9. Bonnie, I honestly give you so much credit. First, to be attacked on another blog, then to post your own response to it on your blog, then post pictures of yourself in a bikini, and then go on the other blog with such a great sense of humor. Honestly, you are a brave person, and I really admire your confidence and your attitude. Clearly not everyone is going to agree with every decision you make or with your priorities or obsessions...I'm not sure that I would find someone who would agree with all of mine. However, you seem like a very strong woman, and your pictures are fabulous. You go.

  10. I felt shame as well when I first read all the things being said about me and other Anthro lovers. Then I realized that I shouldn't let other people's opinions of me define me. I love Anthro, and I don't really care what they think. As I said in my post, I'm sure the people talking junk about me have some obsessions of their own that I wouldn't understand. I love this quote: "Everything is funny when it's happening to someone else." I agree I find alot of the things posted over there funny, so I decided to give them props.

  12. Just wanted to add to the chorus of people saying it was cool that you went back on GOMI with a sense of humor yesterday. Your comments had me laughing, and it's pretty cool of you to move past the drama. Whatever they said about you, at least it wasn't "thief"!

  13. Yes, I think a lot of us that read it felt some shame. I'd be worried that you were not human if you didn't. LOL! I came to realize that we all have things that make us happy that are going to seem silly to people who don't "get it." It's okay. We don't need them to like us. I'm sure they have things they like that we wouldn't understand either. I think getting really into sports is silly. I mean it's not going to change my life if my team wins or not. I just don't get it. We don't all have to be alike.

  14. Thanks for FINALLY commenting. LOL! It's good to hear from you. I'm a big fan of yours! A lot of it IS mean spirited, but you just have to let that stuff roll right off of you. I'm sure the people saying those things have their own issues. It felt really good when I got to the point that I could laugh about it. It's very liberating! You should try it!

  15. Oh, I'm so glad you like the music! I don't get many comments on that! Music is my other obsession! LOL!

  16. Thanks Lisa! These are my favorite jeans. I love Pilcro! Good luck on getting the shoes!

  17. I does seem pretty simple, but the truth of the matter is it makes people feel better about themselves to talk about other people. I'm guilty of it myself sometimes. It's just human nature. Sad but true.

  18. Aw, thanks for this Sherry. I admire your positivity about everything! More people should be like you!

  19. I'm glad you don't agree with some of the things I write about. It would be pretty creepy if you did. :-) Thanks for the nice comment!

Aw, right back at you. Obviously. Ahem.
Yeah, I'm in desperate need of lightening up - it hasn't been a good day, but I will definitely try being a little more sunny tomorrow!

  21. Good stuff Bonnie. I'm glad that you're not scared to be yourself. I enjoy seeing your outfits and would be sad if you stopped!

  22. Bonnie, I can't wait for a post of you hugging all sorts of inanimate objects! You have a great sense of humor, and I think it would be hilarious.

  23. well said! i wouldn't read this blog if i didn't enjoy it. why waste the time? i think bonnie has been very strong in all this. on the bright side, if it wasn't for all this we wouldn't have otherwise known about her great sense of humor!

  24. I've been reading your blog for a good while and have never commented; actually my daughter began reading as well. You have influenced our fashion choices; already we were hugging our individual washers/dryers (after all they are HE)..., in addition wearing more Anthro and styling with belts. Even buying a bunch or ON dresses - LOL.

You have handled the Anthrogate with honor and wound up being the catalist that brought about the outing...Take care!

  25. I love Sherry. Her positivity radiates from her blog. Glad I have her (and you!) to follow... xoxo

  26. Bonnie,
Thanks for continuing your blog. I enjoy your out fits and scenery. Don't let the haters get you down. They are not worth it! (besides being amom is hard enough!)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Btw I think you are the bravest mom to rock a bikini and look good doing it!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love the moss...is it Spanish moss? I can never remember; it makes a perfect background.

Honestly, as long as one's obsession isn't self destructive or hurting anyone else, I'm fine with it. Enjoy your clothes!

  29. Hello! I've actually been a reader for a while but have never commented before, but I feel compelled with all the Anthro-blogger hating going on right now. I love Anthro, J. Crew, and other fashion bloggers. I find the hating disgraceful, hiding behind your computer screen is seriously cowardly. I really don't understand how people can judge your "obsessions," as we all do our own things to relax and release energy. I too love how unique a Anthro item can be, and I always have received plenty of compliments on those, ahem two, that I own. It is amazing how upbeat you have stayed through everything, and I wish you the best of luck!
