"My old clothes don't fit like they once did, so they hang like ghosts of the people I have been." - Death Cab For Cutie

There have been a lot of comments lately telling me that I need to stop buying so many new clothes and try remixing what I already own. While I can't promise you that I will stop shopping for new things, I will do my best to oblige the remixers. The truth is there are very few articles of clothing that I wear for a really long time. My style evolves every year and that requires picking up new pieces. Also, I've lost 10 pounds since last year, so alot of my clothes are too big for me. Such is the case with this outfit. Both the top and the skirt are one size too big. The belt was my saving grace. It literally held everything together.

I really can't understand why people care how many new clothes I buy. I guess these people think my kids are begging for scraps of food because mommy needs more clothes. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, I just purchased Geox shoes and Mini Boden clothes for my boys today. So mommy's not the only one getting new clothes. Maybe my blog would be more interesting if I was more creative with my wardrobe, but that's not me. I don't have time in the morning to be creative. I don't get my kicks by going down to the thrift store searching for buried treasure. I want to walk into a neatly organized store and buy the latest and greatest. If that makes me a bad person then so be it. If you can do better than me then do it. As for me and my house, we will shop till we drop.

  1. Ug, I hate when people are too critical! I used to have a blog and I guess was too vocal about my budget (or lack of one) and would get digs from readers all of the time for purchasing new clothes. I just didn't think it was their business and it isn't. Plus, don't people come here to see pretty images? Anyway, don't put too much stock into meanies :).

  2. I've never left a comment on here before, but I really wanted to defend you from all the people who are telling you what to do with your money!

Unless your kids are starving and running around naked(and I'm sure they are not), then feel free to buy what you want with the money you earn.

We all read your blog to see fashion. I don't think you post any of these pictures so you can get financial advice. This is a fashion blog after all!

  3. Hi Bonnie,
You look great! And honestly if people have a problem with you not remixing...they can find a new blog to read! It's a free country! I don't know why they would torture themselves and read your awesome blog with your great variety of new clothes. LOL.

  4. I love this combo! That white skirt is sassy. I love seeing anything Anthro on you, older pieces or the latest!

I say just let those assumptions fly over your head - don't worry about silly haters. *You* know the truth, those most important to you know, and you can hold your head high. You just keep doing what you're doing! And you *are* creative, Bonnie, despite what you say! :)

  5. I always wonder at your readers suggesting that you should stop buying new stuff, or offer any other unsolicited advice. I dunno, maybe it's because you're so personable and open, but they seem to think they can say whatever they want to you - bizarre. Anyways, I love seeing you in your new stuff - I'm living vicariously through you until I lose 10 pounds myself! :o)

  6. I'm totally with you on not wanting to shop thrift stores. I can't do it! And I certainly don't think you're a bad person because you buy so many clothes. I do however think that being a shopaholic can be a sign that a person is trying to fill a void in themselves or their life... filling that hole with clothes, shoes, material things. Studies have shown that material things really don't make people happy. What makes people happy is having fulfilling relationships with friends and family, finding meaningful work or hobbies, and helping others. Just as an alcoholic numbs his/her pain with alcohol, I see a shopaholic as trying to numb his/her pain with material items. I see it as a symptom of deeper issues. But of course this may not be the case for you. I certainly don't know you but by reading your blog, I have a sense of parts of you. Plus, if you choose to numb your pain in this way, it's certainly your choice. But I know by reading your blog that you are often unhappy.... granted alot of that has to do with all that you've been through and probably also a genetic predisposition toward depression. However, I just thought that if you stop buying so much, maybe it would help you to better confront your emotions and demons and give you more time to work on finding out what truly gives you happiness and fulfillment....something that your clothes and shopping will never really provide you.

  7. Yeah...I did the whole vintage thing but now (after graduating from art school and getting a job) I'd rather just buy "vintage-inspired" and not have to deal with funky smells and condition issues. Whatever. Adorn yourself in whatever you want if it makes you feel good! I'd rather just look at vintage than wear it. Check this out - 1969 fashions! There's a girl wearing red velvet bellbottoms that look alot like a pair that Anthro is carrying at the moment. http://www.missmoss.co.za/2011/04/20/high-school-fashions-1969/

  10. I dont get why people who read your blog want to rip on you - they should take their insecurities elsewhere (if you were posting about being penniless that's another thing). Love that skirt, wish I had gotten it last year so if you decide to sell it (think of me : )) keep smiling A LOT! PS. the only vintage stories that truly have finds are in larger cities, all the same

  11. Your hilarious! I love your unapologetic tone! Good for you! It's your money spend it the way you want! Boo to the haters!

  12. I guess my thing is that it seems easy to put together great outfits by buying the latest and greatest from Anthro and Free People. I'm someone who has about a 25% Anthro wardrobe, 10% designer and the rest is thrifted. Thrifting allows one to splurge more on some pieces because so little is spent on others. It also makes outfits one of a kind in a way that off the rack clothes can't. Right now my favorite fashion blogger is Orchid Grey, though What I Wore Today is also great. Both of these ladies mix high and low. I do also identify with the Anthro community, so that's why I check in here. I'm not doggin' you in any way, you always look great and your pictures are often very good, I just think that a more open minded approach to fashion can be very rewarding. (On a side note, the way Anthro's prices are rising, I might just switch to designer and thrifting...)

  13. I certainly love to shop and get new things. I don't think there's anything wrong with that but I hope you're remembering to keep some back in a savings account somewhere. I've been laid off for 6 months now and am certainly glad I have savings to fall back on. I have a good friend who's always shopping and then moaning about how she never has any money saved. I'm certain neither you or your kids are starving right now but what about the future? A lot of people spent their money on stuff they wanted for right now and ended up ignoring what's going to happen after they can no longer work. We can't count on Social Security 30 years down the line so if you plan to stick around the Earth for awhile you should probably set something aside for the future. I mean if you don't look out and plan ahead for yourself, who is going to?

  14. I love your response to the criticism. And the title of this entry made my laugh (while demonstrating your good humor through it all). You look great so that belt is doing what it needs to be on your now-too-big clothes.

  15. Oh man, I'm with you on this. I change my mind and my wardrobe follows - sometimes once, sometimes several times a year! I love all of your clothes and I don't think you should stop shopping. Sometimes it's nice to see different takes on some of the same stuff, especially Anthro stuff. I personally can't relate to any of the blogs with thrifted and vintage finds... I don't have time for that in my life! But I do tend to run out of ideas with my own clothes. I have this same top in red, it's a great staple piece!
